Opera has released a beta of its Web browser for smartphones Mini 5 Android, the company announced Thursday.

Like beta versions of other phones, Opera Mini for Android 5 beta compresses data up to 90 percent before submitting content to the phone to speed up the navigation data connections with low bandwidth according to the Norwegian browser company .

Other features of the beta version includes tabbed browsing and speed dialing, a feature that enables direct access to favorites via thumbnail images on the homepage. There is also a password manager that can be used to store passwords for email, social networking sites and online banking, Opera said.

The beta version can be downloaded from Android Market or will m.opera.com / next with Android smartphone.

The beta version of Opera Mini 5 was launched in September last year and is now available on BlackBerry phones, phones with Windows Mobile 5 or 6, and phones that can run Java applications. Opera has also shown a version of the iPhone browser at the Mobile World Congress in February.

The user interface has been designed for mobile phones and smartphones with traditional keyboards with touch screen. However, it lacks support for multitouch, the company said via email.

The company is not willing to confirm a release date of the final version of Opera Mobile 5, according to Katrin Jaakson, communications director of the Opera.
