LG Optimus 2X
The Optimus 2X is the first dual core smartphone to make it to the UK and marks a big triumph for its manufacturer LG. LG are typically a company that has played catch-up in the mobile phone world but the 2X, along with its close cousin the Optimus 3D, signifies LG now introducing a lot of firsts into the industry. While there have since been a number of other dual core smartphones announced by rival firms since the ‘LG Star’ (the Optimus 2X’s codename during development) was first seen floating around the internet, the 2X still remains one of the most high profile and highly desirable smartphones to see release in the first quarter of 2011.
The increased processing power, which effectively makes the 2X twice as powerful as the best phones of 2010 (hence the 2X moniker), allows the phone the ability to perform a great range of high powered applications. This includes many apps and games from Android Market that had not been possible to run efficiently on earlier Android phones. Many of these apps now make use of the new gyro sensor that provides full 3 axis controls for a more intuitive proprioceptive user experience.
This extra processing power is not lost on the Optimus 2X as it features a gorgeous 4″ capacitive screen. This features a high number of colours, sharp WVGA resolution and also comes with multitouch support. The phone ships with Android Froyo but can be updated to Android Gingerbread once LG has made the new OS iteration compatible with its LG interface. This interface provides great support for social networks with websites like Facebook being expertly woven into the experience.
The 2X also features some other excellent messaging options such as threaded SMS, email and instant messaging and comes with superb support for all things web related. This is due to an excellent HTML browser, with full Adobe Flash and YouTube support for streaming video, along with high speed 3G and Wi-Fi connections. The Wi-Fi even features DLNA so that you can connect the 2X up to your home TV to enjoy everything the phone has to offer on a larger screen. The Motorola Defy Provides High-End Smartphone Features with IP67 Standard Durability
Motorola has come out with a new Android phone aimed at outdoor types and risk-prone workers. It is a hardy and robust device which carry a lot of high-end smartphone feature as well as functionality.

It runs Android 2.1, not the latest one though, but packs a lot of speed. From surfing the net on the Android browser to downloading software from the Android Market, it seems the Defy isn’t lacking any major features.
Apart from the Motoblur UI running on top of Android, The Defy has a 5 megapixel camera on board equipped with an LED flash. If it’s indeed waterproof, it’s interesting to find if it could be the first smartphone to take acceptable underwater photos.
With smartphones, broken screens and damaged cases comes with the territory. With environment-proof handsets, you only get the very basic phone features. Hopefully, the Motorola Defy will be able to provide the best of both worlds.
